Sled tests including but not limited to, the FCS2000 and Tortus utilise a self propelled trolley driven across the test surface measuring the coefficient of friction. Whilst little used in the UK the test method is popular in Italy and across the USA.

Sled tests are quick and easy to complete, some even have functionality to print their own results. They are however considered highly inaccurate in wet conditions.

The HSL have found sled type tests to to give higher slip resistance measurements to contaminated surfaces than clean dry surfaces. As the majority of slips occur in contaminated conditions this shortcoming in measurement is fatal.

Given the inability to produce reliable results in contaminated conditions, sled type test methods are not recommended by the HSE and are not adopted by Grip Potential.

Grip Potential Ltd provide impartial independent slip risk assessment to a wide range of industries. For help, advice and testing contact Grip Potential.

Further impartial information on slip testing methods can be found on the HSE's slips mini site and as part of the HSE's STEP.

Tests conducted on contaminated surfaces using sled type devices have given unreliable results. This is due to the test method's inability to replicate the hydrodynamic squeeze film created in a wet slip.
