HSE Risk Assessment Needs Everyone To Play Their Part

Wherever there is a case for public safety to be taken into consideration, then the HSE or Health and Safety Executive must have the final word on almost all proceedings. The reason being is that the HSE is the foremost authority on health and safety and how to protect employers, employees and the general public from accidents.

There are a number of reasons why the HSE is in place, as mentioned above there are three major parties at risk and each one of them needs to be adequately protected. The HSE risk assessment is designed to be used and implemented across a variety of different platforms. The reason for this is that the each and every business is different. This means all businesses and public areas have their own specific set of needs in order to meet the demands of the customer.

The workplace environment will be the chief area of focus when theHSE risk assessment is being carried out. This is the area where the majority of accidents could happen; it is frequented by employers and employees and, depending on the business, the customer too. That is a triple risk and so a HSE risk assessment is not only essential but also a legal requirement.

The business is duty bound to protect its employees and, of course, the general public regardless of whether they are customers or not. Take for example a new lobby floor in a hotel; this will have to pass a certain number of tests including HSE risk assessment compliant methods. These include pendulum slip testing to BS 7976 which is the HSE and UK slip Resistance Group’s preferred slip test method.

Once these tests have been passed and the remainder of the HSE risk assessment completed, it is perfectly safe for the hotel to re-open and for employers, employees and perhaps most importantly the general public to use the floor. Of course, if the floor is being cleaned then the correct deployment of signage is also mandatory. Failure to do this and any resulting accidents can be very damaging financially to the business.

In order for a company to find out about the HSE and methods of HSE risk assessment it is a straightforward process. By searching for HSE online you will be directed to their main site and from this you can jump off into any or all of the relevant sections and find out what is relevant for your business. The best approach is to contact the HSE and declare your intentions so that they can organise the relevant paperwork and assessments that will enable your business to use best practice and become properly certified. It may seem like a bit of a chore but not only is it a legal requirement; it is also a very effective way of protecting the company, its employees and the consumer from unnecessary risks and injuries.

In the long term, the HSE risk assessment will prove to have been an investment, rather than a nuisance.
