14/08/11 HSE Risk Assessments Are Vital To All Businesses An important part of any business is how it treats its customers. However, most companies are judged not only on this but on how they treat their employees too. There are many ways in which to motivate a workforce and encourage a better level of performance out of them. If you can manage to achieve this and create a healthy and fun atmosphere at work then it will pay dividends in the long term. Your customers will receive a better service and your staff will be able to reap the rewards of a successful financial year. One aspect of the business that concerns the employee, employer and the customer or member of the general public is health and safety. Health and safety is absolutely fundamental to any business and adhering to best practice is not only recommended it is also a legal requirement. This set of standards that aims to protect the individual regardless of their role is governed by the Health and Safety Executive, or HSE. They are responsible for ensuring that each and every business or workplace that they encounter is adhering to the guidelines that they set out. Of course, there are hundreds of thousands of businesses and only one HSE so it is very difficult for them to monitor everyone at all times. For this reason, they do sometimes rely on the public to ‘tip them off’ about instances that warrant their attention. They will arrange to visit the premises and do this without any due warning; on arrival they will carry out a full and frank HSE risk assessment to ascertain as to whether there is a cause for concern or not. Following on from the HSE risk assessment there may come a warning to the business owner with an improval notice being issued too. This means that within a certain amount of time of the HSE risk assessment and visit, the company will need to make the recommended changes or face a large fine or even forced closure and suspension of all trading rights. This is the worst case scenario for a business and is the reason that they are given an opportunity to improve and create a safe and healthy environment for employees, customers and the public. The HSE risk assessment is an effective and necessary tool even for those businesses that may feel they are keeping all their employees safe enough without help. There are so many risks that only become apparent following a close inspection that it is easy for a business owner to miss them. That is why the HSE is in existence, they will locate and identify areas of risk and also provide best practice as to how to overcome these risks. The HSE risk assessment is all part of this process, assessments designed to scrutinise and cover off all of the areas of potential risk and then create an action plan to avert and overcome these potential hazards. This applies to all workplaces, not just the ones that are often thought to present the most risk, such as a factory or warehouse.
