05/08/11 HSE Risk Assessment Helps To Keep You Safe From Harm Although most companies will have a HSE risk assessment of their workplace carried out because it is required by law, the process should also be seen as an important factor in protecting a company, their employees and guests on the premises. Accidents can occur at any time or place and this leads many people to think that there is not much that can be done to minimise their occurrence, but this is certainly not the case. The majority of accidents that happen can be prevented and with the financial implications that come with accidents occurring in the workplace, it is in the interest of every company to do what they can to reduce the likelihood of accidents happening in their office, yard or warehouse. Even if the actual steps are not properly recorded, it is likely that each business will carry out a form of risk assessment on their premises. This is why it shouldn’t be considered too much of a step to undertake a HSE risk assessment. All companies will be wary of signing up to a process that will take a long period of time or prevent employees from going about their daily routines but in most cases, the official risk assessment can be implemented into the daily or weekly actions of a number of employees. The starting point and most obvious area of the HSE risk assessment is to identify the risks involved in a workplace. A great place to start is by examining the accident book or log if the company has one because this may reveal a place or location that has had a number of accidents occur there. Knowing this, the company can immediately turn its attention to this area and determine why it has become a spot for accidents to happen more regularly than other places. Being armed with this information can allow businesses to speed up the process in identifying the key accident areas of their premises. When looking at a hazard, it is important to determine who may be at risk of suffering an accident. If the reception area of the premises regularly has a wet floor because of people coming into the building from outside is a recognised hazard, anyone walking in this area would be at risk. Those responsible should then take steps to make the area safe but also to warn people that the floor may be slippery. Prevention should always be seen as the key way to stop people from suffering accidents and this is a major factor of any HSE risk assessment. Evaluating risks and putting precautions into place is a key factor of any HSE risk assessment and it is the final step that should be viewed as the most important. After all, recognising areas in which accidents are likely to occur, but doing nothing about them is not good practice for any business and may well leave them strongly open for claims being made against them. In the current climate, companies can create a positive atmosphere for employees and customers by ensuring their premises are as safe and as risk-free as possible.
