02/07/11 HSE Risk Assessments Benefit All Concerned It doesn’t matter where you work, how you get to work, or what you actually do when you get to work; the simple fact is that there are health and safety risks all around us, all of the time. With that said, it is perfectly feasible that one can go to the same workplace for 25 years and never have an accident, on the flip side of the coin, one might experience a painful accident after only their first week in the job, but in the very same workplace. Whether this is down to human error is up for discussion, one thing for sure is that a HSE risk assessment would need to be carried out if it hadn’t been already. A HSE risk assessment is mandatory in all workplaces where there are more than five employees working at one time. This, of course, is all relative and where as a small computer software company might fall into a lower risk category than perhaps a blacksmith, there is still the need for the HSE risk assessment to be carried out. It goes without saying that the health and safety of the general public is of paramount importance but this can often be overlooked. If this is the case then not only will the company suffer through a tarnished reputation but they will also have to face the financial penalties that the courts pass down to them on behalf of the victim. The HSE risk assessment is in place to ensure that these accidents don’t happen, by educating the employers and staff to be vigilant and use best practice in all aspects of their working lives. Whether this is the simple use of effective signage indicating a wet floor or something subtler, it all counts towards a more health and safety conscious business strategy. This in turn protects the employee financially, the employees physically and also the general public are not exposed to any potential risks. It all seems like common sense from the outside and for the majority of businesses it absolutely is. The majority of businesses embrace these ideals and are always welcoming to the HSE risk assessment officers when they come to call. It is good business practice at the end of the day to provide the employees with a safe environment in which to work and therefore extend this to the all-important consumer. The HSE risk assessment isn’t designed to vilify or point the finger at business owners, rather it is a code of excellence that should be followed and adhered to at all times. The need for health and safety may seem more pressing to some companies more than others, but there are so many potential risks that the employer must always be watchful and keep up to date with the very latest HSE risk assessment tools. Regular check ups and appraisal of the current legislation is always a good way to ensure that everything is as it should be, and a desire to improve upon exiting practice is also a positive step to take for a company.
