Figures released by the National Patient Safety Agency show 547,879 "patient safety incidents" were recorded in a 6 month period to October 2010. Whilst many of the incidents caused little harm, over 33,000 caused significant but not permanent harm whilst over 4,000 lead to death or severe harm.
The most common cause of incident were slips and trips, accounting for 29%. The NHS's legal bill now exceeds £120m a year, a figure that could have been significantly reduced had expert advice been sought and cost effective preventative slip risk reduction measures implemented.
